While 2021 didn’t go as planned in a lot of ways for Spencer Rattler and the Oklahoma Sooners, he shouldn’t be seen as the reason it went wrong. When the coverage took away deep passing options, the Sooners struggled to adjust and beat teams underneath, even when they had players like Michael Woods, Mario Williams, Marvin Mims, and Eric Gray that were really good after the catch. The struggles that Williams saw in the Baylor, Iowa State and the second half of the Oklahoma State game can be related to the Sooners’ inabilities to win downfield. Though turnovers were an issue, Rattler completed 75% of his passes on the season and yet it seemed the Sooners were reluctant to use the short passing game to their advantage, even when Caleb Williams took over. In that win, Spencer Rattler was 22 of 25 for 243 yards and two touchdowns and an interception. One of those games was against Kansas State, where the Sooners scored on nearly every possession. While defenses chose to take away the deep passing game for much of the year, only a few times did it seem like the Sooners were willing to adjust and take what was given to them underneath. Even loaded with talent at the wide receiver and tight end positions, Sooners quarterbacks often struggled to get them the ball. The Sooners offense was up and down all year and rarely flashed the expert deployment that had been a trait of Lincoln Riley offenses of the past. Now heading to South Carolina, it was clear that Spencer Rattler wasn’t the only issue for an offense that struggled to find consistency and didn’t get much help from its head coach and play-caller.
His career didn’t close with the storybook ending that everyone had hoped for, but Spencer Rattler’s time with the Sooners should be remembered more fondly in the light of recent events.
